As a result of Thieme Publishers' continuing drive to provide better and more user-friendly products to their customers, the original ethos of the Houben–Weyl series has been adapted to create Science of Synthesis, the standard reference work for the 21st century.

Science of Synthesis offers the user with the most up-to-date information, and is edited by many of the world’s leading chemists. The electronic version of Science of Synthesis operates synergistically with the newly released electronic version of Houben–Weyl.

The electronic version of Houben–Weyl provides the user with:

a web-based portal that is easy to navigate and utilizes standard browser technology

a logical, hierarchical interface that allows the user to browse an area of interest as if it were a book

a search engine which uses sophisticated text searching functionalities

The electronic product can also be searched using the Houben–Weyl Guide that presents families of molecules and functional groups in graphical form. By simply clicking on the structures the researcher is taken directly to the relevant articles. This allows researchers to screen the content rapidly and in a manner that is both intuitive and familiar.

Volume Publication

Professor
John Colin Tatlow
(1923–2008)

We are very sorry to announce that Professor John Colin Tatlow passed away on April 9th, 2008. Professor Tatlow was the Editor-in-Chief of the E10 Organo-Fluorine Compounds (Houben–Weyl) series and made a major contribution to fluorine chemistry during his career. He was the recipient of the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Work in Fluorine Chemistry in 1990. We would like to extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

New Reactions

Science of Synthesis Version 3.5 is now available. The electronic information resource now contains 34 volumes, out of what will eventually be a total of 48 volumes. This upgraded version has a total of 195,000 reactions. The newly added content consists of volumes 29 and 31
